Why were children/teenagers smarter back in the days than that they are now?

And by smarter I mean they had a higher vocabulary. I saw some video of teenagers being interviewed in the 1960s and they were so much more articulate than many people in their 20's/30's today. And Queen Elizabeth I was fluent in at least 5 languages when she was 11 years old.
