Canadian wondering what pre-med and pre-law are

Hi Guys,

Wondering if the Americans on the board here can shed some insight on something- in Canada, you can do basically whatever degree you want before going into med school or law school (obviously prior to getting into med school or law school you do have to pass the MCAT or LSAT though).

So I was wondering, in the US when people say they are doing pre-law or pre-med, is that just a fancy way of saying "I'm taking whatever now and after I graduate I'm going to apply to med school or law school"?
