When I was enlisted in the United States Navy my command sent me to avionics school in Japan. Prior to leaving I had one month to learn as much Japanese as possible. I tried my best but I am originally from the south and I might as well as been standing in downtown Tokyo saying, “I speak Japanese, yawl.” Despite my limitations, everyone was so helpful. I had to depend on the kindness of strangers to get from point- A to point-B.
Although this was fun and exciting, as a voracious reader it was not lost on me that for a few weeks I was functionally illiterate. I have been obsessed with literacy and how to improve my brain ever since.
I went on to earn a MA in English Language Arts Education; and develop an exercise to increase brain power; because just like you train your body every day you have to exercise your mind. Instead of a constant diet of entertainment feed your brain something it can use. This exercise will increase your vocabulary, speed of thought and reading comprehension. This practice will improve your ability to focus and raise student standardized test scores. Genius Loft: Smarter in a Year Challenge is minimalist channel dedicated to educational and financial literacy in addition to problem solving.
Please let me know what you think of this project. The goal is to raise enough money to provide a free summer literacy program. So, if you care about literacy and helping others we would appreciate your feedback.
