I have my diploma in Marketing and I've done three internships so far. I really do enjoy Marketing but I'm entering university soon and whether I want to continue doing Marketing or enter Finance is still a blur. This is fine as I have lots of time to decide which major I want to pursue.
However, if I choose to major in Finance, I have a slight concern.
Under my scholarship, I have the option to experience a 1-year overseas internship. I think it's almost like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I'm in love with the idea of exploring a different culture. It'll be in a startup and the roles would likely relate to fields like business development or marketing. It's very unlikely that it'll be anything related to finance.
On the other hand, people who aren't offered this opportunity have 1 year "more" which they can spend searching for internships in the finance industry locally in our country. Obviously, when it comes to subsequent internship and job applications, they have a competitive edge over me because they've simply had experience working in a financial role while I have not.
I understand that I can still find finance-related internships during the other 3 years of my university life, but in the first year, most jobs go to students with more experience (year 2-4s) and once I'm back from overseas (I'll probably go in year 3), I'll again be competing with people my age who already have had finance internships because I was overseas for a year.
Now, this wouldn't be a problem if I specialise in Marketing because my one-year internship would be a lot more relevant (including all my previous internships). I know it's also not impossible for me to do that overseas internship AND still position myself excellently to get selected for finance internships in the future - but it's that much harder.
I'm afraid I'm thinking narrowly so I'm here to seek input and gain fresh perspectives.
