How to "skip" geometry when going from 8th grade to 9th grade

Hi, I am in the Bay Area(California) and am going into 9th grade this fall. I have registered in a high school course to take geometry this summer and go directly into algebra 2 this fall. A few of my friends want to do the same thing but are wondering if they can just learn geo from their parents or do they need to take some approved class to go into Algebra 2?
