What's that engineering that deals with making robots and cool gadgets?

I will be starting my IGCSE O level class tomorrow, and our school provide some recommendations for what subjects to take if you want to be something. I am a little confused of what type of engineering I will have to choose. So my interest is making little cool projects that deals with machines or robots or stuffs, like for example, my cousin is made this homemade camera gimbal stabilizer, and I find it interesting and hopefully study it. But what type of engineering is it? Is it electrical, mechanical or mechatronics? I try to search on Google but I didn't get a single difinitive answer.

Do people underestimate a college education?

I’m 24. I went to the same school district my entire life and graduation from a high school that had an above average curriculum in my county. I didn’t do too well in school, but managed to get into just one AP class my senior year. After high school, I didn’t go to college right away, but I worked to save money, buy a car and eventually afford a community college. But while I was out of school, I still felt like I was smarter than the average person I’d come across, for the most part. Then I went to college. I am about to graduate with a degree based in science but focused on something specific. After all this time in college, I now realize how much I really didn’t know. Even my gen ed courses taught me so much about everyday life, and has made me a more well rounded, well spoken individual. People really put down the classes that have “no relevancy” to their field of study, but some of them truly helped me just think BETTER. Any thoughts?

I think AP Courses should be required in America

What I learned in AP US History compared to friends in normal US history is sad. I only took three APs, the other two being European History and Psychology. They all contained material EVERYONE should know to be a responsible citizen and voter. I don’t know what I missed out on in other AP classes, but I am now in college as a psychology major.

The point is, the material in AP courses and college general education classes should be a requirement for ALL Americans. It should be high school level. I believe our education system is too focused on fulfilling requirements on not on actual learning. Most students find AP harder because we expect it to be, if it is the standard, it will feel normal. I honestly found AP easier because it was more studying, less boring busy work. The courses could be pass/fail and the AP exam scores could be used to rate students for college admissions if they choose to go.

Our society is still rife with human rights abuses. If everyone had an AP level of understanding in history, psychology, and biology, I think we’d live in a very different world.

Is there a benefit to reading books in lieu of getting the information elsewhere? (internet, podcasts, videos, etc.)

I often hear people say something along the lines of:

"Successful people read books frequently"

The obvious reason for this, is that they are exposing themselves to new information or ideas. But people could do this through a myriad of other mediums now

This is obviously subjective, but it feels like people are still harping on books, and not the other mediums

Which makes me wonder, is there something more to reading books than just the information gained?

Is it that books don't contain distractions like the other mediums? (Ads in podcasts/videos, and infinite distractions on the internet)

Is it that the information is retained better when reading on paper rather than a screen?

Does the book act as an anchor? (Your mind immediately goes to "learn mode" when picking up the book)

Or is it just that the saying has not been updated, and it really is just about the information?

Thoughts?

I'm beginning to realize academia is an enforcer of inequality.

Everything from grant awarding institutes, foundations etc. to research universities. Everything is about exclusivity, credentials, bureaucracy and tuition or taxes.

I feel education beyond post-secondary is disingenuous.

Even professors and their labs seem to be run by greed, prestige/ego or salary. I find it unappealing, and I actually look down on it. But industry is no better.

I can't believe it. Some colleges are not like this, but the entire concept of a college in the first place is just as bad, leveraging education for tuition to fund research to avoid reliance on tax funded grants which there aren't enough of in the first place (ergo). Tax funded grants fuel the need for exploitative businesses to raise tax revenue. Graduate school is excessively long. Undergraduate education is becoming too focused on crystalized knowledge over fluid thinking.

Arbitrary grading curves pit students against each other, making grades relative and subjective to the mean of the cohort rather than to an objective score of achievement (not in all cases, but the norm).

Anyway. I'm very fed up with American life in fundamental and major ways.

We lack important applicable knowledge because research is bottlenecked by funding and exclusivity/ego. Meanwhile, people behave as if undiscovered truths don't exist because they haven't been discovered yet and behave without respect to plausible consequences of doing so potentially putting people at risk. Then, meanwhile again, a decent chunk of people only care about exploiting for riches while they're young. I feel America is screwed.

Simple definition of plasma ?

I want to know what plasma actually is in a simple yet detailed explanation. What is it used for ? How hot is it ? Do we have plasma in us and what is it used for ? What’re the benefits ? I’ve also read that something happens when it’s ionised which makes it unique, what happens but explain it very simply please ? I also read it makes up 99% of the universe, How and if that’s true are we basically living in plasma ?

Update on the VR curriculum I’ve been designing for students!!!

A bit of background on myself. I’ve been using VR for over 6 years now (just recently surpassing 10,000 hours used with the technology across over 10+ headsets.) This year I decided to branch out and work on a curriculum in VR I could teach to students while simultaneously informing the school bored of the potential use cases VR has past the one class I was teaching.

This time around the course now fallows much more structured lectures about the past, present, and future of VR technology. As well as offering 3-6 medium for them to work in, final presentations and projects, as well as feedback/reflection worksheets.

It’s been difficult getting the headsets approved and software in order, but after the admin team saw the success of the first and second courses they’re now keen on purchasing more headsets and hardware for next year!

If your interested in seeing how it turned out I posted on r/VirtualReality and r/OculusQuest with the images and results!

I’m also 100% open to answering any questions or inquiries about the curriculum or process I had to go through. Either through comments or PM’s.

Any high school, public, private or international school that's worth it to attend?

I just can't stand the current school i attend.. is there study opportunity outside there? scholarship maybe? I'm a student from Malaysia btw

since someone said the post i made previously is too vague, so I'd elaborate a little

so here's few things i could list up,for you to read.. actually there's a lot more, but nahhh I'm tired from typing

  1. no gadgets allowed -right, so i experienced online classes for the whole 2021, just 3 days at school.. and we are living in modern world now, who can live without gadgets? I'm a debater also, so I'm used to getting lot of information.. and during online classes before, i tried to maximize my knowledge on one topic by googling everything, use gadgets also.. the school i currently attend, doesn't let the students to bring their phones unlike mrsm nowadays.. they always consider the negative things first rather positive.. positive things would be more knowledge gain by students.. if they don't understand, they could google more materials about that.. there could be more materials that could make their understanding better.. I'm someone like this, if I don't understand, and couldn't reach the teachers, I'd make some efforts, googling the best materials that would get me understand.. why not each students experience the one week no gadgets, they would turn crazy.. even elderly, maybe they can stand 1 day no phone, but later the next day, feel like wanna scroll fb and everything.. see, we are attached to gadgets this era..

  2. 'sunat' stuff (religion taught) -okay, this time, not the sunat circumcised.. but sunat in islam.. so basically, sunat things, if you do, you get pahala(rewards).. if you don't do, you don't get anything, but not dosa(sins).. right, so i attend religious school.. so there's some sort of sunat things you can do.. BUT, something terrible i found is that, they FORCE you to do it.. how can i explain to people islam is simple when I feel it's burdening me.. just like i said, if you do, you get pahala(rewards).. if you don't do, you don't get anything, even dosa(sins), you wouldn't get dosa(sins).. there gonna be days where you feel very tired after a long day.. moreover if you puasa(fasting) at that school, really tired.. something else would be that school is so large.. from class to dorm, might take you 400m from walking.. teacher easy la, go everywhere with cars.. even them drive car when going to another place cos this school is too large, can you imagine the students?

  3. pengetua (principal) -so this pengetua(principal), used to teach at my old place when I'm still kid before.. basically good friend with my parents, since my mom is guru besar(headmistress) and dad is working at PPD(something about education office related), smaller version of KPM(ministry of education) that handle school stuff.. so this pengetua, he treats the school, as if it's his school.. if he thinks of one idea, and wanna do it, HE WOULD DO IT.. if he has new rules in mind, he would established the rules.. so really tired from his rules🙄🤦🏻‍♀️ this makes me harder to transfer to another school since he's good friend with my parents.. another reason it's hard for me to transfer is because my parents constantly busy.. despite of working under education sector, they got plenty of business to handle.. they afford to send me to private,to international, but they rather send me to boarding school,so that i could live independently cos they are busy..

  4. love to do program -right, so this school love to handle event.. since this is religious school, so they wanna raise up the school name, by handling events.. when people see this school online, they gonna compliment like this school is perfect.. my online friends did ask what school is this, and i told them to google it themselves(i wont mentioned the school name).. they said this school is luxury.. BULLSHIT.. attend this school first, only then you can say whatever you want.. the 5 stars toilet showed to outsiders, IT'S ONLY USED BY GUESTS or when the VVVVVIP came, everyone is allowed to used (to let the outsiders think, this is how school treat us).. this school has won various awards, due to this.. but this is bullshit.. we students, kinda treated like robot especially when VVVVVIP wanna 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️ in conclusion, this school tryna looks like an excellent school, but the fact is it's just a low school..

  5. teachers always fierce -idk what's the need for the teachers to be fierce to us students.. we don't even make problems.. yes we break rules, but that's because we're all too exhausted from this school.. if you are mpp(prefect), the pengawas line(another word to say prefect), you are even more exhausted.. cos teachers have high hopes on you, to be the leaders for the students.. but no, even pengawas line breaks, cos they too exhausted.. im not saying every teacher is fierce, there's still few being kind.. especially those teachers that experience asrama(living by dorm) during their old days

that's enough of me complaining😭

The Javits program expired. Enrollment is down due to the pandemic. This usually means budget cuts are going to impact education.

Please be sure to call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 to express your support for gifted education and the Javits program. The Capitol Switchboard will be able to connect you with your two Senators and one Representative.

Looking for suggestions of STEM material for student with Down Syndrome

Hello! Hope you are all doing well!

If I may, I'd like to ask for help with a challenging and important situation.

I'm a junior Tech teacher giving STEM lessons for middle school, we'll be receiving our first student with DS (Grade 6) and I've been tasked with helping the Learning Support teachers with constructing a special Tech curriculum that caters for this student's special needs. So far I know he loves music and theater and that he is not literate.

I'm doing my research and thinking that one big skill that I could try and develop with him would be basic computational thinking, but also that I could help by bringing digital tools made to aid children with DS to our school's repertoire.

All that being said, does anyone have any suggestion of apps, games, toys, activities or anything of the sort that you think I should look into?

Thank you very much and wish you all the best.

Earmarked for Union Site Rep - What does it entail?

Hey all,

I got an email last night saying someone dobbed me in to be a union site rep. I love unions and what they do etc. but I haven't even been in the job for a year.

First of all, how much extra work does this add? I realize I'll be meeting and greeting new staff which isn't a bother, more meeting and paperwork would bother me though.

Also would I be putting advancement etc. in jeopardy? Would taking it on as such a new employee also cause issues with some people?

Thanks

Which masters course should I apply for? I'm interested in Digital Art, Illustration, Digital content creation and Animation.

I completed my bachelor's degree in engineering and got placed in a software company. Digital art, illustration, graphics design, content creation kind of things has always been my interest and I'm currently planning to do masters in this area. I have a basic understanding and experience in the mentioned topics. I'm actually doing a lot of groundwork to find a university that offers a course on these streams, I found one in Australia - Master of Applied Design and art at Curtin University, but they are no longer accepting application for that course. I'm finding it really difficult to find an exact course like this that would match my interest in the above streams. If anyone knows any universities offering the same, Kindly mention them.

I regret being a model student and getting good grades in school

This may just be a rant, but throughout my K-12 education I always strived to get straight A's or at least A's/B's, basically a teacher's pet. Now, however, I feel like it was all for nothing and I didn't get much out of it besides stress and pressure. A lot of my friends and acquaintances who ditched class back in middle/high school cared way less about their grades, got D's and F's, but still went on to have good careers or transfer to top ranking colleges, and they were always the ones who boasted that school and grades were meaningless. It feels a little sad and disheartening. Like, what is the point of grades and trying to get an A? Maybe those people were right. Thank you for reading.

Can you be kicked out of High school for bad grades? (CA, 9 years ago, public school)

When I was in 11th grade I was behind around 100 credits.

I got called up to an office, I can’t remember the full conversation but basically they said I’d have to go to a charter school.

I asked my mom and said do I really have to go? Is the school demanding it? I already knew I wasn’t graduating and wanted to spend the last of my time with friends, preferably.

She said that basically the school was transferring me and I couldn’t stay.

I can’t remember the whole conversation but basically i didn’t want to leave, mom maybe didn’t know her options, and I always thought the school kicked me out.

My mom doesn’t really remember exactly what happened but she just said they she never even checked me out.

I’m just curious if I really had that option. btw if anyone cares no I didn’t complete charter.

Looking for STEM teachers to test a 3D Virtual Makerspace platform with kids in grades 3-7.

Hello folks,

I am working on a 3D platform like Minecraft to enable kids to build anything from a solar-powered car to a fully functional space colony using real-world supplies like gears, tires, motors, lego blocks, etc. The meta idea is to help STEM teachers run hands-on STEM lessons without the need of buying and organizing supplies and at the same time help students practice high order thinking skills like critical thinking, creativity, and persistence to complete the STEM challenge.

Our first lesson "Build a solar-powered car to reduce CO2 from the air" will be ready to run on the platform by May end. We're looking for teacher volunteers to test the lesson with their students over the summer. This will be a paid assignment. Please reply if interested.

27 M from MN, in SD. Applying to University of Dallas, Richardson TX. I have aptitudes of engineering and conceptual philosophy. Poetry, music, anything creative. Love the outdoors and respect nature. I live my life constantly self researching health dynamics and care routines. I study people and what they do, how the earth acts and what can help make the functional infrastructure of our world more sustainable. By no means am I a hippie, conservative, liberal, or anything that could insult the human spirit. I am just a man looking to get intelligent enough to take care of a nice piece of land and travel the world researching solutions and helping crisis. Its been 10 years since I graduated so re entering academia is going to be rough. I've always read and wrote but its a little wild and undefined as you can see from my structure and grammatical errors here. Gamer and recovered addict, I spend my time making healthy habits or memories of love. Here to make the most of the short time we have. With love, all considerations appreciated.

Where should I apply for economic stability of a 2 person 2 cat household of working individuals?

What is the best school for a noob that has a lot of science potential?

What kinds of things should I ask myself beginning the process of college application?

Help me understand the reasons why this teacher got suspended for bringing cotton bolls to class

I came across this headline today. I understand the lesson as being meant to teach empathy to students for what enslaved people had to endure when working with the sharp, prickly bolls, as well as understanding why the invention of the cotton gin created a stronger economic impetus for enslaving people. I am really having trouble accessing the other side of this issue, where the quoted parent says the lesson could “evoke so many deeply hurtful things about this country” for her mixed-race children. I'm looking for other articles, but not finding one that explains it in more detail.

Masters Degree Specializations

Hi everyone!

A bit of background about me: I an an international school teacher teaching English as a Second Language ( ELD / ESL / EFL ) at a Tier 1 school currently. I am looking at getting a masters to increase my odds of getting future jobs (as many INTL schools require it), learning to better educate my students, and further my pay scale.

Currently, I do not have any intentions to pursue admin, but this might (probably?) will change in the future. I would like to leave my options as open as possible.

I am curious as to what specializations people recommend getting/how much it actually matters/etc.

The specializations I am currently looking at are:

M.Ed. Curriculum and Instruction

M.Ed. Global Studies in Education

M.Ed. Administration and Leadership

MA TESOL

Thank you!

What should I teach tomorrow (grade 11 English - University)

I'm a student teacher and I'm 100 in charge without any direction. We just finished up 2 weeks of short stories and they handed in their essays (well 1/3 of them did *sigh*). What should I do tomorrow? We did an extra short story at the end but for the life of me I really can't think of an activity to do with them for it. Their next unit is poetry but I know their real teacher has a plan for that.

Will a Masters in education be enough to allow me to teach with a non education BA?

I’m getting a BA in anthropology and I want to know if I will be able to teach (at least high school level) if I got a Masters in education.

I keep looking online but I just get ads and sponsored sites for certificates and such. I just want a clear answer. I’d ideally want to teach something around anthropology like history, sociology, even home ec would be cool.

an education model that could solve almost any problem in the present education system all over the world. like literally the best education system ever

I've been working on an education model for the last few years. I can say that it will be the best education ever created and would have a huge impact. I hope I'll be solving every problem. So just tell me if you have any problems in the present education and see if I've solved it. Just shoot the problem you think our education has.. im curios to know if i missed any!

In praise of an uncensored arts education

I believe that most of the teachers who presided over my arts education in high school would today be fired, chastised or otherwise canceled. Not because they were bad teachers — they were, to my mind, brilliant teachers — but because they let their students take the lead on what kind of art they made and participated in.

Tested Game-Based Learning for teaching Kids Mathematics

Children's enthusiasm for learning can be sparked through the use of Seven free Escape Team missions based on mathematicians. Here's how to do it.

The ability to focus and concentrate is critical to a successful learning experience. We want to instill in our children a strong educational foundation from an early age. To prepare them for the real world, we teach them a wide range of subjects such as mathematics and science, as well as geography, history, and linguistics. These lessons are best introduced to children when they are young, according to educators and teachers. Some children become disinterested and overwhelmed by all of the learning that is taking place. As parents, we hope that our children will be able to succeed in school and pursue their interests, but we cannot put too much academic pressure on them. If they succumb to the pressure, they'll lose interest in learning and become anxious. Giving children too much stress is not the answer. So, to keep them interested in learning, you need to spice up the process

Does Texas require 90% attendance for ALL classes in order to graduate or does that refer to the ones needed to meet the credit requirement?

I’m not sure where to post this but right now if I get credit in my government and English class I would’ve met the prerequisites for my college and needed classes for graduation. Since I took high school classes in middle school, I then would’ve had more than the 26 minimum credits and endorsements for graduation. My question is that does Texas still require me to make up hours for the classes I don’t need to graduate in, even if without them I’d graduate regardless?

I want to confront my headteacher about how shit she is at her job, is it a good idea?

The state of my school pisses me off. It went from an old, run down but vibrant happy place to a modern shithole full of depressed teens drifting through their day doing nothing and no one cares. Gna be honest I’m guilty of this. Me and the rest of the school go abt our day sleeping in classes, vaping and nothing else because theirs no enforcement to stop us. We’re not running riot so they don’t care, which leads me to the real problem

They only care about how the school looks, and not at all how it is. This is by far the sole problem of the school. They run around telling kids to “sort your uniform out!” “get your coat off!” And to “keep your phone away!“ and nothing else at all. The education of their students doesn’t matter to them at all, so we all do what the fuck we want. We obviously can’t do anything acc fun because that looks bad in the school, however sleeping and other depressive shit is absolutely fine because it doesent stand out.

Teachers are lazy. There’s abt 3 decent teachers who genuinely care abt kids education and despite being the strictest in the school she and he are by far the most respected and the most liked. Because they care about the students doing well and the students in general than living up to mrs Preston’s shitty standards and getting themselves brownie points. Mrs feliciello for example, rips pages apart, 100% has some weird control or anger issue that makes her rlly fucking scary but ppl like her bc she’s realistic and she acc tried to help us with our education instead of “copy that down so it looks like I’ve taught u something.”

Example 2 bc why not. We had this shitty supply who stayed for three quarters of y9 and despite the several reports about her behaviour, the school did nothing. By her behaviour she used to send 7-10 kids to inclusion per lesson for any minor mistakes, even at times for literally nothing. She’s just point at a kid, say go to inclusion and it lead to us all missing out on a year of education. She’s teach us nothing, and I mean nothing. Can’t word her any differently than just crazy. Was something very off abt her on top of the fact she spent every lesson teaching us nothing, patrolling the classroom and sending people out. The school found out, left her in, waited for the old teacher to return and then never spoke about it again. No “sorry u missed out on another year of education! Sorry your all behind and we should’ve listened! Sorry your all going to fail and it’s my fault!” Just carried on like it never happened

Worst part is I’m not the only one who can see it. Everyone can, no one cares. Teens would obviously prefer to do nothing that be forced to work when we’re all behind.

End of the day my schools shitty and I want people to know abt it so here u go ig

The schools Christ the word in Rhyl, north wales for anyone who can be arsed sending this ti someone who can do something abt it but I just want ti get it off my chest tbh

i want to know what fact, concept, content, or skill, deliberately or unknowingly, is being ignored or omitted in the curriculums in your country or in the systems of educations you have experienced. i personally have been in/experienced Turkish, American, Russian and British systems of education. some of my examples would include the concept of evolution being omitted from biology curriculums (Turkey), and the negation of the Native American history from history curriculums (United States). please share what does the "null" curriculum in your country look like!

Is there any particular function or benefit of US Gifted & Talented programs?

I was in one but it didn't seem to have any use. I was pulled out of class to do IQ tests. That was basically all I noticed. Nothing fancy, extra work, or different classes than everyone else.

Is it just to spend tax money and create job security for some people?

PS: My inner paranoid conspiracy theorist wonders about the remote possibility of using such programs to inventory brainiacs for future monitoring or clandestine recruitment.

Hi guys. I'm a trainee music teacher from Ireland. I'm working on an assignment on a topic of my choice. I'm choosing the role religion plays in Irish (and international) education. Specifically how the needs of religious minorities are not catered for.(I'm partly choosing this because I'm interested in it but mainly because I've already done some research on it) anyway to get to the point one of the assignments grading criteria is ''Evidence presented of engagement with peers/colleagues/ professional networks?'' So I would love to hear your thoughts on the topic.

Just because little Sally can add does not mean she is not a Holy terror in class. Just because Matt gas behavior issues does not mean he cannot succeed in his core subjects! Bottom line, Teachers cannot fail a student as punishment for behaviors. Behavior and grades are separate issues.

Teaching; calling or lesser of evils?

Is teaching a "calling" for you, or simply the "lesser" evil of all jobs?

Hi there! I was speaking to a recent colleague of mine who decided that they were burnt out by their previous job and wanted a career change. I casually mentioned I was one foot in, one foot out of being a teacher myself and we suddenly started to get encapsulated in that rabbit-hole of professions.

I'm also not particularly sure myself if this is the right path to enter for me, but for the sake of my colleague, I did promise them I would make a post about it on reddit and let them read the answers! They do not have an account for clarification.

Specifically, we hampered around these topics:

  • how society treats teachers; underrated, underappreciated profession
  • lifestyle of being a teacher; waking up early, long hours, nightly grading
  • if teachers actually like teaching themselves, ie. a "calling" or if it's more of a "lesser" of all jobs ordeal
  • teaching in comparison to other educational routes; social workers, psychiatrists, counselors, etc.
  • regret; is there more to life then being a teacher, and would we regret not pursuing something different when we had the chance
  • bureaucracy, red-tape, admin

We had other concerns, but primarily our conversation centered around on these topics. I'm not even particularly sure how to answer, so I thought I would post it here.

Thanks for all you do as educators. We are so looking forward to your reply!

Are teachers *fairly* paid?

I think most people would agree that in the US, say, teaching is an underpaid profession in the sense of there being, on average, a low financial return relative to effort for many people who work in the industry.

However, I don’t know if this entails that teachers are unfairly paid. In each case, supply (are there lots of people who wish to be teachers relative to teaching positions in the US?), demand, willing buyer and willing seller determine the exact salary offer accepted and hence pay grade with respect to the culture. If we accept that teachers are unfairly paid, it would probably have to do with culture in some ways but I can’t say I know.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Would it be acceptable for you if your child’s teacher were also an OnlyFans creator?

Just curious to hear what people think. I made a similar post in r/Polls earlier but would be interested to have a longer discussion.

For context, about an hour ago I found someone on Reddit who was complaining about being sent explicit and unsolicited pictures because she works in a kindergarten and she’s afraid that the kids may see something they should not. This same person also posts very NSFW pictures quite publicly on her profile…

For all I know, the internet can accept this and what a person does on their own time is truly their own business but there’s a possibility of sampling bias on r/polls and I’m interested to have a more textured discussion about this.

I was thinking of taking online courses in Edx to increase my knowledge and get certifications then apply for an M.Ed or M.S or something in Early Childhood Education but I don't know if they will actually be considered useful or just a waste of money? Florida Rejects Publishers’ Attempts to Indoctrinate Students

I look forward to the state of Florida publishing more information about why specific texts were rejected. Oh, who am I kidding, they won't make that information public, this is all just showboating and putting up points prior to the announcement of DeSantis' presidential campaign.

https://www.fldoe.org/newsroom/latest-news/florida-rejects-publishers-attempts-to-indoctrinate-students.stml

“It seems that some publishers attempted to slap a coat of paint on an old house built on the foundation of Common Core, and indoctrinating concepts like race essentialism, especially, bizarrely, for elementary school students,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “I’m grateful that Commissioner Corcoran and his team at the Department have conducted such a thorough vetting of these textbooks to ensure they comply with the law.”

“We’re going to ensure that Florida has the highest-quality instructional materials aligned to our nationally-recognized standards,” said Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran. “Florida has become a national leader in education under the vision and leadership of Governor DeSantis. When it comes to education, other states continue to follow Florida’s lead as we continue to reinforce parents’ rights by focusing on providing their children with a world-class education without the fear of indoctrination or exposure to dangerous and divisive concepts in our classrooms.”

College Assignment-Lifespan and Development Help

I have an assignment from my Lifespan and development class, however I’m not a very social person and don’t personally know any with children nor have any of my own. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!!

Child's Drawing Assignment Seek out at least 2 examples of children's drawings of children of different preschool ages (2-7 years is acceptable). I recommend asking other children (not your own). "Ask" the child to describe the "picture" and briefly describe the response on the back of the drawing with the child's sex and age. You will have to identify children available to you to ask (friends, family, co- workers, etc.) and assess each drawing for the stage of drawing it illustrates. (Note: Many three- and four-year old' first pictures of humans look like tadpoles!) You should identify which stage the child's drawing falls in (chapter 7) and if their age corresponds with their stage. Upload a picture of the drawings and type the short description along with the sex and age of the child. Please do not include the child's name or other identifiable information. Picture 1: Stage of drawing: Age: Sex: Description: Picture 2: Stage of drawing: Age: Description:

How reflective is the Grade Point Average? (GPA)

As an undergraduate student I was fascinated and terrified by how a difference of 1% in your final grade could get you either a 3.3 (79%) or a 3.7 (80%). In reality, is the difference between someone who gets a 79 and someone who scores an 80 that big? Would you say employers and graduate schools and whoever else who cares about your GPA have an empathetic understanding of this? Do you think stressing about being below or above this arbitrary threshold is healthy for students?

(The GPA thresholds are almost very similar in a bunch of large North American universities I had looked up)

This means that I have qualified for the course, but I will be offered a study place only if some of those, who have already been offered one, decline it. Good databases of course curriculums, textbooks or study plans

I have a Computer Science degree and mid-term plans to get a master's but I enjoy studying things on my own.

Having studied programming on my own before my degree I realize the importance of a good curriculum and good textbooks, but being outside a university these are not always easy to find.

When looking for some specific subjects I find MIT OCW works very well. For physics, I've also found an extremely detailed blog post with a study plan.

So I just wanted to discuss, share these and maybe learn of any other good sources for course curriculums, textbooks or study plans other people might know.

(Of course, I do understand the importance of formal education these are just personal projects for fun/love.)

Do employers care if you have a GED diploma rather than a highschool diploma?

Hi, I'm 16 and I'm a sophomore in highschool at the moment. I've been doing virtual classes ever since the pandemic started and I'm not doing too good my 10th grade year. There's too much work that I could care less to do, this resulted into me having a trainwreck of failed classes, with some exceptions. Most likely I'll be forced to repeat the 10th grade again, unless for some reason there's a chance I can do summer school, which I doubt. It's like a month and a half before summer break starts for me, and there's no way I'm making up the shit grades I have gotten all year just for doing assignments for the 4th quarter. On the high chance I do have to repeat the 10th grade, I'm dropping out of highschool. I plan on working part time to support my family and to save up money for me later in life. With all that being said, once I do eventually get my GED when I'm 18, am I still on par with other people who have regular highschool diplomas? There is a person at my university in the U.S. that skipped high school completely and went to college younger than the age of 14. How does someone do that legally, and could the average student do this if they had the option to?

I go to one of the top public universities in the U.S. There is a person at my university that skipped high school completely and went to my university younger than the age of 14. This information is publicly available, but I do not know this person personally and don't want to dox them, but I'm sure you've seen some people like this on the news, normally labeled "child prodigies."

How does someone do this legally, and if a middle schooler, at the age of 11 wanted to do this, what could they do to make this happen?

My understanding of what happens is that normally, someone at the university, probably a renowned professor or faculty, becomes impressed with the child. They then push the university to accept the student to college early. My guess is a child like this never gets their high school diploma and gets all their high school college prerequisites waived. Perhaps they might go back later and get their GED but it's worthless since they already have a college degree. Does that sound right? Please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm genuinely curious how the process works.

I believe a lot of the students in the AP classes at my high school were intelligent enough to graduate at least 1-2 years early if they were given the chance, but none of us were offered this lol. How does something like this even happen?

what exactly is trade school?

I heard some people talking about how trade school is better than a normal college/university and cheaper. I have a few questions if anyone would be kind enough to answer. :)

1: do i need to finish high school to go to a trade school? in my opinion, school hasn’t brought me much towards my dream job (video editing business) so if possible, it would be great to get out of high school asap.

2: do trade schools even offer video editing and production programs?

3: how much would it cost, and would it really be cheaper than college?

4: would it be better than college and would i have more flexibility?

School work while sick

Hello, not sure if this is the place for this but I’d really like to know the answer!

So, I’ve been out sick from school for the past few days with stomach sickness and covid. My teacher tells me I must have my assignment completed by tomorrow or else it will not be accepted. I was in so much pain that I couldn’t even watch TV or sleep, let alone complete an assignment. I just don’t think I should be punished for being very sick.

Am I obligated to complete school work when absent due to illness?

I am in Highschool for reference, thanks!

Why did my teacher give me this look?

This is about that same 50-year-old teacher who I cried over because she didn't tell me that I was beautiful. The same teacher whom I told that I "liked" her, and we are both females. I was 16. She rejected me and the whole conversation didn't turn out well. She said she was a teacher and that I was way, way too young for her.

I remember when I attended the graduation of the class above me. She already knew then that I "liked" her. I told her two weeks before. My mom and I were standing together and the teacher saw us and she talked to us. She was smiling when she saw us. Everything seemed normal. She talked to my mom and she asked me how my school year went, since I wasn't taking her class that year, asked me what college I was going to, what I wanted to be. Then my mom took a picture of her and me together. Everything seemed alright. But then.....

When it was time for the graduation ceremony inside the church, I was standing in a pew close the center, so that I could see her. She was walking in the procession, and I was looking at her. I was so in love with her. I was floored. I was smiling at her and looking at her like the way people do in movies.

When she made her way in the procession, she was looking at me, but she wasn't smiling. She gave me this look like she wanted to kill me, cremate me, then burn my ashes. We just had this silent moment of just looking at each other, but her look was a look of hatred for me.

That was the last time she ever made eye contact with me. That was the last day that she ever spoke to me. What was that look for? Why did she look at me like she hated me? What happened just an hour prior when she was talking to me and my mom and everything was fine? Was she just pretending in front of my mom and I? Did she still remember what I told her two weeks before? Was she trying to give me a warning that that was the last day she would ever speak to me? I was a junior in high school then, and she ignored me as if I were dead for my entire senior year.

How to get my 6 year old interested in reading again

Long story short my son had a tough year because we moved and he never really adjusted to kindergarten in his new school. There's a lot of stuff I could get into and that I'm still upset about, but the good news is that he's now thriving when it comes to math. Reading and writing however is a challenge and 99.9% of it is that he just doesn't want to engage in anything related to it. Trauma might be too strong of a word, but I think his new school created a lot of negative associations with reading and my son feeling in his own words "stupid" and that he can't learn to read. I know this isn't true and I don't think he has a learning disability because he was reading sight words at 4. Covid meant that he wasn't in preschool prior to kindergarten but he was in an at home daycare and they did practice reading and writing, he seemed to enjoy doing this. What can I do to get my son interested in reading and writing again, and make it fun?

Is there any statistic anywhere that shows the degree of cheating students within a high school or college?

TLDR; Sorry for the long post. I got a bit carried away, but overall, I just wanted to ask the following:

  1. Is the number of students caught cheating within a high school or college reported anywhere?
  2. If so, would anyone happen to know where I could find it?

Some background:

Hi! I'm new here and I've read some of the posts and they've been really interesting. However, there has been something on my mind for quite some time now. I was wondering if there were any reportable measurement anywhere that documented a students likelihood to cheat based on what school they go to. The reason I ask, is that now that I've gotten to travel around a bit between quite a few states across the country, I noticed that the approach to education differs greatly from time to time.

In particular, I noticed during my undergraduate years and beyond, that even if students went to a particularly well-rated high school, they were still very likely to cheat. The only thing I noticed is that it was highly coordinated, and oftentimes, across well over 10+ students who had clearly been doing it for years. Another thing that stood out to me, is that education to these same students were a status symbol, while those from other areas had a particularly different focus with regards to their education. Usually, when I see people get caught, what I noticed is that they usually aren't from these schools, and then getting caught was more or less in response to having given up on the "learning" part of their studies, poor coordination, or moreover, they are just trying to make it out.

Something that stood out to me greatly over the years was meeting people who actually wanted to learn in school. I, personally, met individuals and teachers from what are considered "low-rated" schools, mostly only to find that neither of which truly wanted to be there. To the teachers, it showed that the students were losing interest, but to the students, it showed that the teachers seemed to have stopped caring quite some time ago. Which, while I understand that result of becoming a low-rated school, I often wonder how it gets that way, and if teaching methods come into play at all. So, cheating will respect to them isn't what I want to focus on here.

Why do people cheat from highly-rated schools?

It was quite interesting how differently the students were taught when I got to compare responses to the question, "Why do you personally go to school?." In some areas, while a school can produce "competitive" students, they don't necessarily produce competitive students (if you know what I mean), and sometime it is the other way around. Having taken courses from a few different states myself, it would seem like some schools are the type to attempt to "weed out" students, which so far, seems to produce more students who cheat, or those with a "fake it until you make it" mentality as it pertains to their education.

However, for the schools that didn't seem to be of this nature, it seemed that the main reason for it was that the students were taught in such a way that allowed for them to connect the dots with whatever it was that they were interested in. The professors and teachers more so wanted to share their love of the subject, as opposed to teaching something that they truly didn't care about. I still meet people everyday who love to talk about whatever it is they are learning, and attribute that passion to some experience in high school where they were "allowed" to grow in their own way. I thought it was pretty cool how often I heard the same story over and over at times.

So far at least, it seemed that students that cheat often come from the same school, or at the very least, a place where the only goal is to get through it with X marks to get X job to get X amount of money. I'm personally looking for measurements on this online, but I'm not able to find them anywhere. I don't think schools have to report that, but I truly wonder what I'd find if they did. Would anyone here know if that is a metric they report?

What is the “primary” race of a child?

My daughter is attempting to enroll my granddaughter in Kindergarten in New Mexico. When filling out the initial demographic information she was able to say White (her) and African American (her husband). But then the form asks her to identify the “primary” race of the child. How on earth is she supposed to make a determination? The child is exactly 50/50. I recognize this is essentially a box ticking exercise for state/federal government, and perhaps it doesn’t matter (or maybe it does?), but how would you answer this question if you had to? And why is it so rigid?

I’m sorry if this is the wrong subreddit for this question, and if it is, perhaps someone could suggest another one.

The biggest threat in schools is ....

Students not caring about the consequences of their actions.

I am speaking from the urban High school I teach in. The behaviors are the number 1 factor creating teacher burn out and stress. When a student no longer fears consequences; schools cannot enforce policies. This is an epidemic.
Just today, a Vice Principal entered my room to explain to students how important it is to respect teachers. The students, mostly Freshman, laughed at the Principal. They ignored her even when faced with suspension. They mocked her, and I. When students believe they control the school-the school cannot succeed.

We launched a service to help children and teenagers get ADHD treatment!

Hi everyone,

Teachers that we’ve interviewed recommended posting here.

Done recently expanded into ADHD pediatrics (children aged 6-17) and I would love some feedback! Especially if you are based in California, New York, Florida, or Iowa, where we are live at the moment.

Check it out here: https://get.donefirst.com/3LPPh6F

Disclaimer!

  1. ADHD is a life debilitating issue that destroys any possible productivity and career progress for many Americans. We are helping real patients and there's an extensive process to triage patients. For people looking to get their one-off hits, it's definitely a lot of work and money to lie and go through this process.
  2. Medication is not for everyone, but people do need it. Please do not scorn people for seeking treatment. That's just propagating the stigma and it's not fair
  3. If you are between the ages of 6-17, you must involve your parents/guardian in the process.

Just pass them anyway

I was the gen ed teacher for an ARD (IEP meeting) today where the student had gotten 90s in all his classes. Except mine, where he had a 28 (5th social studies). I have no idea how he’s getting such high grades, the kid reads at a 1st grade level and his writing is completely illegible. He doesn’t understand basic ELA concepts.

Why a 28? Because he waits until the last minute to complete assignments, doesn’t watch the lesson, and guesses on the quizzes (I use a lot of Google Forms because of the ease of importing grades).

I was told privately by an admin that I should give my SPED students at least a 70 because the paperwork and processes for dealing with a failing student is more than I need to worry about. I’m seeing red about this. It is doing these kids a disservice to just pass them along because you don’t want to deal with fucking paperwork. They’re not learning anything by it, and they’re not going to get a pass on the 8th grade STAAR when they don’t know the material.

If teachers did this with my kid, I’d be livid. My own 8th grader (also a SPED student) is currently failing several classes because he doesn’t do his work. Ya know what I do? I get on his case and make him do it. I know my kid is smart and capable of the work, he chooses not to do it, and gets graded accordingly. Then he loses privileges until he gets his grade up because that’s how he learns to do his work.

Stop coddling these kids because it’s too much work to do right by them. And for sure as hell don’t reprimand the one teacher who is trying to teach them responsibility.

I am really worried about my little sister

My sister has some learning disabilities such as dyslexia and in general she has a “slow” thinking skills so she has a really hard time understanding and memorizing things.

For instance, she will be 14 years old this year and even right now when someone asks her what’s the number of her birthday month is (and it being December so the 12th) her first initial response would be “It’s winter”. And only after several minutes and hints she will fully understand the question and remember the right answer. Or if you ask her how many months are there in a year it would take her a very long time and a lot of tries to respond to the question correctly and after being retaught that several times she still doesn’t remember it well enough.

However, with this in mind she has also managed to learn English fluently (as it’s her second language) and at times she grasps information pretty well.

My worry is that currently she is studying in a British online school as it is more convenient and easier for her, however, starting next year she will be starting her GCSEs and the British GCSE program that lasts two years is pretty hard and complicated due to the amount of content you need to know for the end of the two year exams. The program expects you to do a lot of independent study to understand how to answer exam questions and you have to memorize a LOT of content and my sister will just not be able to do that. My parents were planning to sending her off to some college after grade 9/10 so she would at least get some kind of education but I worry that she won’t even be able to graduate from middle school if she takes this hard program. Could anyone recommend what to do? Perhaps you know someone who has been through a similar thing or know any programs that are more suitable and are a little bit easier. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Professor will not help with specific calculations in homework assignment.

I’m taking a class that requires complex calculations and figuring out which numbers to include in those calculations. I am new to this area of study so I’m a bit overwhelmed. The class is completely online, so I only have access to the teacher via email. Some of my answers are not correct (we can instantly check or answer is correct or not in Canvas) and I am trying so hard to get the correct answers. I asked the professor, and they said that they will not help with specific calculations, and that I should wait for the feedback after getting the assignment back? Is this the correct approach? This is my second degree I’m working on, and during my first degree 15 years ago teachers loved if you visited their office to work through these kinds of problems together.

When creating a custom CSS theme on Canvas (by Instructure), is there a guide out there showing all the elements that the standard themes have?

So I'm creating a custom Canvas theme.

At first, I just had the basic elements tailored to the way I want them, e.g. <p> elements with a certain font, font-size, <h1> elements with a certain colors and size, <a> elements showing different colors for links based on status (visited, hovered on, etc) , etc.

Following this, I uploaded that .css file to the Theme Editor's "Upload" tab, preview it, then apply the theme.

This is where I saw that there are other elements on the Theme Editor page that I haven't customized yet, such as checkboxes, radio buttons, dropdown menus, breadcrumbs, etc.

I update my style sheet with new styling to certain elements I initially didn't have custom styles for, then I upload an updated .css, then come to find out that I'm still missing some other elements that I only found out through browsing around and looking at various course pages. I must've done this whole back and forth several times by now lol.

Which leads me to my question (ie. this post), is there a guide out there showing all the elements that the standard themes have? So that I can make sure I customized all the default elements and maintain a consistent, customized theme.

Looking for a compelling essay that supports general education in both high school and college

As a high school upperclassman and someone looking at colleges, I find myself increasingly frustrated with the prospect of continuing a gen-ed that does not contribute towards either my personal interests or future aspirations. I understand that I am young and very well might have a more self-centered world view than I am currently aware of, but I fail to fully comprehend the emphasis on a gen-ed. I would like to be convinced that a gen-ed is in fact beneficial to me so that I can continue my education with an understanding mindset opposed to a resentful one If anyone knows of an essay I have described, please link it below and feel free to add your own opinion on the matter.

You cannot be "friends" with your students.

Being a teacher (k-12) is a delicate role. Students and Teachers are not on equal footing. You can be friendly with kids but not friends. This is a mistake being made by too many educators. Students do not understand boundary lines, which is why the Teacher must set them! Enforce them! Be a professional not a "pal".

What do you hate about the field of education?

I have a couple of paths before me. Lots of opportunities, but two solidified. I am an incoming New York City Teaching Fellow, with an assigned subject area of Special Education, as a generalist, for the 7 to 12 grades. I have no classroom management experience, and I made the decision to be a teacher when I was unemployed.

I'm hoping to hear real life insights of veteran teachers. What do you hate or dislike about your profession? What changes would you like to see? Would you enter the profession now knowing what you know?

I know I would be a great teacher, I'm just not sure if it would be something I enjoy. In life, I truly don't think there is a perfect job, so this would just be the lesser of all evils. I studied advertising, but if you know anything about that field, it's hard to move up and get into the door.

I don't mind students, I enjoy teaching and coaching, and I had a great experience with high school.

Looking to hear stories about veteran teachers, maybe deep in their profession about what they feel the industry is headed. Thanks.

Can my school reveal my identity to my bully?

So basically, I've been having issues with the same student for a while now and every time I report an issue to my school administration, the student will get spoken to and after the fact is even worse to me. Recently I had a meeting with the school about swapping classes to get away from this student and I told them not to talk to him at all. Later, a friend texted me that he told my friend that he was talked to and the person who had talked to him had told him not to talk to me about it. Is this legal? I honestly don't feel safe anymore.

student teaching

Why does student teaching suck so much? I love teaching but I always feel burnt out when I go into my placements. Do you have any tips for student teaching?

Common Core is Censorship

I am an Anthropologist/Archaeologist by trade and education. It wasn't until college that I was made aware of the crimes our government committed against the Marsalese people, and it was later still that I learned of the existence of a long abandoned Japanese American internment camp sitting long forgotten in southern Idaho- mere miles from my first professional survey. I made it a point to educate my nephew when he was looking for a topic to write about in his American History class. His mormon teacher had the audacity to send him home with a low grade claiming his use of ethnographic resources to be unsubstantial and inappropriate in the eyes of the district.

They picked a fight with the wrong kid. I'm fully prepared to go full Karen on this situation

Any Guidance Counselors in here for elementary school that doesn’t mind answering a few questions?

  1. How are the ELLs in your school affected by issues such as bullying and racism?
  2. How do you address the issue of tolerance in the school community?
  3. How do you communicate with the families of the ELLs in your school?
  4. How do you implement RTI Tier II and III interventions with ELLs who are struggling in the school community?

Would really appreciate it for a project of mine. Thank you!

Changing school start times is not to help students...

It is to make truancy numbers drop. This year, at my urban High School, we are experiencing an agregious amount of absences. There are students that have missed 1/3 or more of the school year. Instead of working on the root causes of truancy, administrators want to work school around students. I believe this is yet another way to not hold students and families accountable. After all, didn't low income families complain about how far behind their kids were during remote learning? So, why would parents continue to allow students to "skip" school during in person learning? Again. Bad, lazy, apathetic Parenting and/or other family drama are, in my opinion, the root causes of most truancy issues. Changing school start times won't fix dysfunctional homes.

Early Years Education research

Hi!

I’m a psychology student with an interested in educational psychology and I’m currently needing Early Years Educators (up to age 5) to take part in my study.

It’s a very brief questionnaire. Takes only 5 minutes, everything is anonymous, and I would REALLY appreciate the help. Thank you![Study link](https://www.psytoolkit.org/c/3.4.0/survey?s=zefOr)

Seeking Folks with Experiences Teaching or Learning in International Settings to Conduct Email Interviews

Hello! I am seeking folks who have had educational experiences outside of the United States to conduct email-based interviews. I am a graduate student studying education and I am writing a paper on the experiences of folks in non-US educational settings.

Interviewees need to have at least 2 years of experience as a learner, or 1 year as a teacher, in an educational setting outside of the United States. I need the interviewee to have completed secondary school or the highest level of schooling required by the country you were educated in. Experiences in learning can be in post-secondary, secondary, primary, or non-traditional schools. Experiences in teaching can be TEFL or international schools, but not teaching on U.S. military bases in other countries.

The paper produced will be a non-public document and you will not have to disclose your identity in any way. There will be 15 questions. This will take about 20-30 minutes to complete.

Fill out this form if you are interested in being interviewed. Further instructions are in the linked Google Form.

Thank you!
